چکیده

The 6 GeV CEBAF accelerator at Jefferson Lab is arranged in a five-pass racetrack configuration, with two superconducting radio frequency (SRF) linacs joined by independent magnet transport arcs. It is planned to increase the accelerator energy to eventually support 12 GeV operations. To achieve this, a new 7-cell superconducting cavity is being built to operate at an average accelerating gradient of 12.5 MV/m with an external Q of 2.2 x 10. The present RF system, composed of an analog control loop driving a 5 kW klystron, will not easily support the narrower bandwidth cavities at the higher gradients. A new RF control system that may incorporate digital feedback, driving an 8 kW klystron is being proposed. In designing a system it is important to understand the control limitations imposed by the cavity, such as microphonics, Lorentz force detuning and turn-on transients. This paper discusses these limitations and the resulting design constraints for new RF controls.

Rf System Development for the Cebaf Energy Upgrade*

A planned upgrade of the present 6 GeV CEBAF accelerator at Jefferson Lab will increase its energy to 12 GeV. To achieve this, new 7-cell superconducting cavities are being built to operate at an average accelerating gradient of 19.5 MV/m with and external Q of 2.2 x 10. The present RF system composed of an analog control loop driving 5 kW klystrons will not support the new cavities and their i...

Rf System Modeling for the High Average Power Fel at Cebaf

High beam loading and energy recovery compounded by the use of superconducting cavities, which requires tight control of microphonic noise, place stringent constraints on the linac rf system design of the proposed high average power FEL at CEBAF. Longitudinal dynamics imposes off–crest operation, which in turn implies a large tuning angle to minimize power requirements. Amplitude and phase stab...

Electronic Damping of Microphonics in Superconducting Cavities*

In previous applications of high-velocity superconducting cavities, the accelerated beam currents were sufficiently high that the microphonics-induced frequency excursions were significantly less than the loaded bandwidth, and the power absorbed by the beam dominated the total power requirement. In new applications (CEBAF Upgrade, RIA,) the beam currents will be sufficiently low that the rf pow...

Upgrade of the Cebaf Acceleration System

Long-term plans for CEBAF at Jefferson Lab call for providing 12 GeV in the middle of the next decade and 24 GeV after 2010. Such energies can be achieved within the existing footprint by fully populating the accelerator tunnel with cryomodules capable of twice the operating voltage of the existing ones within the same length. In particular, this requires the development of superconducting cavi...

Front-end Computing in the LEP2 RF System

Since 1996 the Large Electron Positron Collider (LEP), has been running at beam energies above the W+production threshold, following the LEP2 energy upgrade which involved the installation of a large superconducting (SC) RF system. Much of the intelligence required to run this RF system resides in the front-end machines of the RF control system, and many enhancements have been made to meet the ...
